I must admit that I bought this disc because I was intrigued with the plan of casting Edward G. Robinson and George Raft as adversaries in the same film. Of course, these gentlemen are two of the “giants” of the crime/film noir genre. Unfortunately they are let down by a hackneyed script and mediocre production values.

The film takes residence in Montreal during the “cool war”, and “the other side” wants to kidnap a intelligent scientist and the details of a top-secret project he is working on. Their agent, who poses as a book-seller ( ruthless Peter Van Eyck ), hires an American gangster ( tough, no-nonsense George Raft ) –exiled to Portugal–to approach to Montreal, reassemble his weak gang and grab the scientist. As this idea takes shape, a couple of related murders regain the attention of an RCMP inspector ( a cerebral Edward G. Robinson ) . Can the inspector foil the position and set the scientist before he is whisked off somewhere gradual the Iron Curtain?

As I have indicated, this is not a very kindly film, but Messrs. Raft and Robinson aloof have a formidable presence. George Raft is perfect as a guy you really don’t want to nefarious! On the other hand, I agree that the broad Edward G. Robinson is wasted here–this role couldn’t have been mighty of a challenge for him, and it could have been played by any competent, journeyman actor. There is another reason to sit through this movie–Audrey Totter. As Mr. Raft’s ex-girlfriend who is “recruited” to charm the scientist, Ms. Totter gives us another rivetting performance that has made her one of film noirs’ best “femmes fatales”.

I have yet to perceive a truly complete definition of “film noir” and I am certainly no expert. I suspect, however, that “A Bullet For Joey”s dwelling as film noir could be start to debate.

The disc has a decent full-frame, gloomy and white record, and mono sound.

On the hide of the DVD is a terrific representation of Robinson, Raft and Totter, and all three are very watchable. However, on the help I look words like “pulls out all the stops for excitement and edge-of-your-seat suspense”–”explosive”–”breathtaking”–”pulse-pounding”–”crackling”–”rapid-fire”–”action-packed”. If you swallow all this hype, I have some “Ocean-Front Property in Arizona” that you might be involved in!

Apart from the stars, this one is disappointingly routine.

If there’s ever an award for “Most Tedious Film Noir Ever Made,” this limited stinker would be in strong contention. It is a unfortunate, plodding police procedural with essentially nothing to recommend it. About the best you can say is that the last 15 minutes are marginally less slow than the rest. Edward G. Robinson is squandered. Position in Montreal, the film has all the French-Canadian flavor of Frank Sinatra singing “O Canada.”

Much maligned film detailing the last days in the life of Laura Palmer has been dismissed by many as being an out of control freak exhibit.Without the restraints of television David Lynch lets his imagination reduce loose (a televsion is literally smashed to pieces at the destroy of the opening credits) and you may not understand everything but it’s more straightforward than later Lynch mindtrips. The first half hour(which if you’ve seen this on T.V. is sometimes entirely lopped off) which features the investigation of Chris Isaak and Kiefer Sutherland is tedious and irregular. It concludes with a freakish David Bowie cameo before journeying to Twin Peaks and Laura Palmer herself where the film really takes off.Trying to flee the mysterious being Bob who molests her she descends into a vortex of drugs and sex.In the performance of her life Sheryl Lee gives an intense emotionally unstrung performance as Laura making her descent all the more harrowing. There are some scenes that have such a dreamlike quality they are unmatched in recent cinema:Laura’s best friend follows her to a club where Julee Glide sings the heartbreaking “Questions In A World of Blue” before abruptly swiching to a nightmarish strobelit club complete with clanging music.Laura’s glide into a recount on her wall into the otherworldly lodge.Laura losing her grip on reality stumbling through a pitch sad wood. The climax is gutwrenching and hard to glance(and reportedly slightly toned down after the audience at the Cannes film festival were too sickened to relish their dinner afterwards) and will leave you shaken. As always Lynch gives us no deleted scenes or commentary leaving us to deal with the film as it is.Oviously not for all tastes and there’s no quirky humor for fans of the series. If however you peek the film from initiate to accomplish it could be one of the most disturbing experiences of your life.A surreal masterpiece.

The Amazon review suggests that anyone who didn’t watch the Twin Peaks TV series can’t understand this film. I didn’t search for that series, know nothing of its characters, but was remarkable impressed with the Lynch I’d seen to date (Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart) . I took in the first fragment of the film without a predicament, smiling through great, and admiring Lynch’s guts. Then the valid movie starts. I didn’t smile at anything else in the film. In fact, I was emotionally numb for about two hours after it ended. I’d never been so shaken by a film. You need to appreciate the main character, to feel this worthy injure, and Sheryl Lee makes it easy. What does she say to her “good” boyfriend–”The Laura you faded to know doesn’t exist anymore. There’s only me.” We fetch to gawk if not where the unique Laura went then why. Smile through the first fraction. You’ll know when it’s over. He’s unbiased setting you up for the waste.

What could be worse than contracting a virus that threatens to overtake you and beget you retract human flesh, spreading at random for a seemingly an unknown reason? Try having to hunt the beasts that are infected while being infected yourself, keeping the virus in check (to some degree) while using it as a weapon to both detect the beasts and to kill them as well. That’s the reasoning leisurely the Bio Hunters, Komada and Koshigaya, and the Demon virus that seems to be working its map through the streets of Tokyo; most notably resulting in a series of brutal attacks on young women of the city and the subsequent ingestion of their internal organs. Level-headed, that’s before the oddities of fancy, emotion, politics, and divination enter the already clustered field.

Although in the really short department (45 minutes isn’t something I normally approve of), Bio Hunter more than makes up for this fact with portions of intrigue - and the occasional person that happens across the mind of Yoshisaki Kawajiri. His brand is more than apparent here, too, with the terror of the epic delivering and the wobble of the fragment captivating exquisite quick, showing the viewer that it is the lack of padding and not stutter that keeps the length minimal. Combine this with quality animation, a position that drips blood, nudity, violence, some nice scenery dripping blood and violence, and a fable that is worth keeping waddle with and you have a “special something” that everyone should at least scrutinize into.

Most anime fans seem to gravitate towards the newer, childish, humor-oriented anime, and forget about the thrillers that made the genre accepted in the United States to open with. Biohunter should be one of those classics. It was made by the same people that made Sinister City and Ninja Scroll, two of the most notorious old-school anime movies of all time, and it shows. The basic premise of the movie is that werewolves, vampires, and monsters actually could be exact, if there were a genetic disorder that mutated people into these creatures. Two professors are fighting these monsters, and one of them has contracted the “demon virus” himself. The character designs are gleaming, especially for the infected professor. The action scenes are intense, and the animation is proper. There is a microscopic amount of gore, but objective enough to withhold it animated. It’s R-rated stuff, but it won’t originate you sick like some anime. It’s only an hour long, but it’s definitely not rushed, and you probably won’t even eye how short it is. This is one movie that you shouldn’t miss out on!

The film:

“The Reader” deserved its Oscar for best actress, but it also deserved the Oscar for best film (it lost to the ghastly “Slumdog Millionaire.”) It tells the epic of a young man growing up in post-war Germany who has an affair with a mysterious older woman. Without spoiling too distinguished, the memoir ends up touching on the holocaust, how worthy we can blame participants, and whether or not esteem transcends these historical anguish.

Normally, I despise holocaust films. I net that Hollywood too often beats us over the head with the “it’s Awful” message (This Objective In! Hollywood Geniuses Seek Holocaust Was Unpleasant!) as opposed to mining the great more consuming tales of personal struggle, loss, redemption, and ignorance. “The Reader” offers an incandescent, probing, and insightful inspect at the human costs on those who were not bellow victims, and on the society of post-war Germany at grand. It also tells a heck of a cherish account, to boot.

I felt so respected by the makers of this film. There is no heavy-handed moralizing, in fact, the message of the film seems to be that, while of course there are astronomical good wrongs that have been perpetrated, there are lesser consequences which do not accomplish it into history books, but do have an impact on exact people and deal them proper danger that ought to be respected.

As mentioned in other reviews, this is not a movie for the kids, at least not kids who aloof titter when they sight nudity on conceal. The first half of the film is consumed by a lusty affair between a 32 year outmoded and a 15 year traditional. It’s not for immature audiences.

The Blu-Ray:

On the opening scene, I understanding this film must be shot on digital. The source was unbiased too desirable, with petite to no film grain in evidence. Upon further research, however, I have discovered that it was indeed shot on Kodak Vision2 and Vision3 film - which Kodak advertises as producing less grain in extreme light and in general. Given this, and the fact that detail is generally so strong in this image, I can only purchase that this Blu-Ray has been mastered without excessive Digital Noise Reduction.

It is a sparkling 1.85:1 image which suits nice widescreen displays beautifully. Sunless levels are strong, loads of detail is evident in shadows, and colors are extremely naturalistic. There are many moments that offer the sort of “3-D” realism that the best HD can give. The quality of the image adds immediacy and impact to the already curious film.

Audio is very dialogue driven. This is not a BD that will rock your neighbors.

Extras are very strong. 42 minutes (!) of deleted scenes are presented in 480p widescreen. I watched them all, and I would say only one gash was truly discouraged - a minute bit of backstory for Michael’s law professor that would have added depth to the account. Mini-documentaries are also available, touching on the writing and casting process, as well as Kate Winslet’s aging with make-up. Overall, it’s a very strong slate of extras.

*********

Any fan of serious dramas and romances would do quite well to lift this up. It’s a truly ample movie that is very affecting and also conception provoking. It’s a monument to respecting the viewer, allowing them to digest complex morality without beating them over the head with a “message.” I would compare it to films like “The English Patient” or “I’ve Loved You So Long” (another 2008 Oscar Nominee) .

It is also presented in an exceedingly sparkling HD transfer and a strong package of extras. Certainly, if you’re doing a gawk of 2008 Oscar nominees, you should hold this up over the trite, pat Hollywood fare of “Slumdog.” It’s also better than the very profitable, but somewhat flabby “Benjamin Button,” and the gracious, but not as brainy “Milk.” I can’t recommend it enough.

To be definite from the beginning, this is not a movie for family viewing. Throughout noteworthy of the early portions of the film viewers are treated to relatively graphic nudity for both Kate Winslet and the young man (David Kross) that plays the younger version of Ralph Fiennes.

The film covers the chronicle of Hanna (Winslet) and Michael (Fiennes/Kross) and their relationship and lives. The setting is NOT World War II, but is actually post WWII, starting in 1958, as well as portions station in the 60’s and 70’s, up thru the 1990’s.

Rather than spoiling the epic, I’ll halt providing details on the account there, and simply say it is quite inviting. The yarn is based on a best-seller by Bernhard Schlink, and the filmed version features an award winning performance by Kate Winslet (Academy Award and Golden Globe) . On Blu-ray the film looks magnificent showing favorable detail and clarity. The audio quality is also great though the film is not an action-thriller and doesn’t feature the typical booming explosions and sound effects.

Most definitely worth viewing, but again not something that most families would mask around younger family members. The R rating is most definitely deserved for the graphic nudity. The language is actually surprising spruce as the film focuses on the account rather than mixing in profanity honest for shock value. Not necessarily a film that will be watched repeatedly, but definitely a film worth viewing.

The second season of “Exasperated About You” is a surprisingly spacious improvement on the first. While the first season showed glimpses of greatness in the interactions between Paul and Jamie, the second season saw them at ninety percent of their comedic ability. There is unruffled the occasional misfire or joke taken past the point of humor, but the majority of the seasons episodes work really, really well.

With the second season, the casting settles down and the actors really gain their rhythms with each other. Lisa Kudrow’s Urusula, the waitress at the local bar and grill Riff’s, is an especially welcome addition as a recurring cast member. Leila Kenzle’s Fran gets mighty more depth as the separated and eventually-divorced best friend of Jamie and Anne Ramsay’s Lisa (Jamie’s sister) settles down nicely into a neurotic mess.

There are some really memorable episodes from the season, especially “Disorientation”, featuring Jamie’s first day in grad school, and “Icy Feet”, the Valentine’s Day episode detailing how Paul proposed to Jamie. Equally memorable (for opposite reasons) is “Up All Night” featuring a very poor cameo by John Astin (the modern Gomez Addams) as himself, showing that every so often the writers could unexcited loose the line between tremendous reuse of a joke and flogging a lifeless horse. While mighty better than Season 1’s truly gloomy spend of Jerry Lewis, “Up All Night” served as a reminder that the indicate was almost - but not quite - to the levels of excellence it would enact in its middle years.

Technically, the release is less of a disappointment that Season 1. The spreading-out the the episodes onto three discs rather than two means that the episodes discover decent on a laptop or HDTV system, but there are mild no extras to bid of - not even chapter stops. I’m gratified to shell out the extra money for extra video quality, but it would be nice to have episode promos or commentaries or something. As it is, though, it’s nice to gawk them actively working at keeping the trace of a full-season release of a TV expose down.

All in all, I do recommend this boxed spot, although I consider Columbia-Tristar could quiet set aside some more worry into the releases of future seasons. As for the present itself, this is the season where the note really begins to get itself. If you liked “Wrathful About You”, but skipped the first season due to the quality of the exhibit or the quality of the release, launch here.

In the first season dvd package Sony sacrificed portray quality in order to cram all 22 episodes on 2 discs. Happily, the 25 episodes which comprise season two are contained on 3 discs and the characterize is considerable sharper as a result.

This isn’t the only thing that I like better about this place of discs. For one, the writing got powerful better in the second season. The jokes were funnier, the characters were more solid and for some reason, Helen Hunt is cuter.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mad About You - The Complete Second Season! Click Here

Again, there are no “extras” in these discs. No commentary, specials, prick scenes… nothing. But when you assume the outrageous impress it’s being offered at, it’s a colossal deal regardless. I only hope that the consumer response is strong enough to warrant issuing the remaining seasons.

Gremlins is a whee of a film (if you don’t mind the occasional gross-out) from producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante. Zach Galligan is the young man whose inventor father (Hoyt Axton) gives him an odd Christmas present: a tiny, furry creature that comes with a set of rules: don’t get him wet, don’t feed him after midnight, and keep him away from direct sunlight. But Galligan breaks the first rule and the damp little critter pops out a dozen little offspring. Then the offspring break the second rule and, overnight, turn from cute furry guys to malevolent scaly guys with world domination on their mind. The only way to stop them: rule three. But it’s an anxious (and extremely funny) battle to make it to daylight–and the bad gremlins find ways to multiply over and over. Great special effects and a grusome sense of humor make this a wild (if occasionally dark and scary) ride. –Marshall Fine

They set off in a 1956 Chevy Viking camper on a cross-country journey to the border of Argentina and Brazil.
